Painted for a friend's mother, who's going through a hard season right now. I was told my flower paintings bring her joy, and there's nothing that makes this work feel more worthwhile than that. This one's for Jean. Deep plums and warm corals built up thick with brush and palette knife, blooming against a soft pink field. A little brightness, sent her way.

A Garden of My Own

Every bloom here fought for its spot. Built up thick with spackle before a single drop of paint went down, this one is less "painted" than sculpted — a whole overgrown plot of flowers, no two alike, crowding a soft blush sky. It's the kind of garden you plant for no one but yourself.

Watercolor blooms of coral, gold, and pink float against a bright acrylic green, each one bubbling and pooling on its own terms the way only watercolor can. The green was painted in around them afterward, holding each bubble in its own little pocket of space. There's something inherently joyful about the shape of a bubble, round, a little wobbly, gone as soon as you touch it, and this piece leans all the way into that lightness.

A palette knife worked through wet paint again and again until the surface took on the texture of woven fabric, ridges catching thin lines of neon blue and chartreuse like something glowing from underneath. The magenta is the loudest thing about it at first glance, but the real story is in what's rippling below. The parts that took patience to build and only show themselves up close.

Built the same way as "Just Beneath the Surfaces" — palette knife through layer after layer until the canvas took on that woven, fabric-like texture but this one carries something more personal in the title. There's a faint shape pressed into the purple, almost a silhouette, like two outlines that have folded into each other until you can't quite tell where one ends and the other starts. That's the whole idea: nothing is ever really just yours or just mine once you've spent enough time together.

That electric orange ground, worked into fine ridged texture with a palette knife over layer after layer, has more than a little Factory-era energy to it. Not a portrait, not a soup can, just color doing exactly what it wants, loud and unapologetic.

The answer to tjhe question, ‘is it reckless?’ painted in the same breath. Deep maroon and crimson poured in long diagonal streaks across teal, then worked over with a palette knife until the ribbons took on their own texture — cracked, cellular, alive. No hesitation this time, no question mark. Just the color moving exactly the way it wanted to.

There's something underneath this one. Loops and marks laid down in the earliest layers, then painted over and built up again and again, left to surface only where the paint allowed. It felt like writing a letter you rewrite a dozen times before it's ready to send: the first draft never disappears completely, it just sits under everything that comes after. What you see is the final version, but the earlier attempts are still in there, holding the whole thing together.

Painted in memory of my grandmother, whose love of pink runs through this entire collection. Wanda was warm and thoughtful in the way that makes a room feel safe just by her being in it, and these blooms, crowded together, layered in every shade of rose and crimson she loved, are my way of keeping a little of that warmth close. This piece anchors the collection it inspired.
